My Introduction to Auriculotherapy
By Jim Shores, PhD
My introduction to Auriculotherapy was over 36 years ago, after spending over 10 years with other modalities and techniques. The effectiveness of Auriculotherapy is exciting as we continue to develop protocols and improve technology. In the early to mid 1970’s Auricular Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy was taught by many groups, many of them are no longer active. Dr Paul Nogier, a medical doctor, neurologist, and acupuncturist from Lyon, France well known for his contribution to Ear Acupuncture, labeled the technique Auriculotherapy. He was in Atlanta with us in 1971 and presented and exciting program that really gave Auriculotherapy a good start in the U.S. The first published research was the Treatise of Auriculotherapy published in 1972. The next and only 2 conferences he presented in the U.S. was in San Francisco at the University of San Francisco. The 3 visits to the U.S and 2 Conferences in Montreal, Canada, where he introduced the 3 phases in the late 70’s, some call the back of the ear the 4th phase, which is really the motor aspect of the 1st phase. Dr. Nogier’ s first published work on the phases titled From Auriculotherapy to Auriculomedicine was published in 1982. His last and major change was published in 1989, COMPLEMENTS DES POINTS REFLEXES AURICULAIRES. He was with us, for a short time at the GLEM International Conference in 1994 and seemed to be failing quite a lot, He passed away in 1996. Needless to say, his great contributions to health care will certainly be remembered by all.
Auriculotherapy is advancing rapidly, with the clinical research that continues, and the support we are getting from those that have been using Auriculotherapy for many years.
For most Auriculotherapy is still the best kept secret in medicine

Below is an email I received this past week. It is just one of many reports we get continuously as we strive to improve technology, protocols, and technique.
Dear Dr. Shores
I just wanted to share with you a recent experience that I had with the Stim-Flex.
I had a long-standing cardiology patient who mentioned to me in an office visit that he had been
suffering with a continuous headache for 3 months. He had been to a well-qualified, competent
neurologist who had done an extensive evaluation, including M1RJ and CT scanning, without any
pathologic findings. He had then been tried on escalating dosages of several medications without
improvement. He was desperate for help, and was planning a trip to Mayo Clinic to see if they
could provide him with some relief. I suggested that we try auriculotherapy. At the first
treatment, I took his pain down from a 7/10 to a 2/10, instantaneously at the time of treatment,
and he was very grateful. He came back to see me the following week, and I treated him again.
The pain resolved completely during the treatment, and has not returned~ I was grateful for your
technology which allowed me to help this gentleman who could not be helped by conventional
pharmacologic therapy.
